President Franklin PierceDr. Peter A. Wallner, author of Franklin Pierce: New Hampshire's Favorite Son (2004) is a notable expert on the life of President Pierce. Dr. Wallner earned a B.A. from Waynesburg College (PA) and MA and PhD in U.S. History from the Pennsylvania State University. For thirty years he taught history and was a school administrator in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania before moving to Concord, New Hampshire, to research the life of Franklin Pierce. He continues to work for the New Hampshire Historical Society and teach as an adjunct instructor at the New Hampshire Community Technical College at Nashua, and at Franklin Pierce College, Concord. Dr. Wallner's second volume on the presidency of Franklin Pierce is slated for publication in fall 2007.

Did You Know...Franklin left to fight in the Mexican War on May 13, 1847 after an emotional send-off from a large group of Concord citizens. He made a brief address to the crowd, stating "I will come back with honor, or I will not come back at all." After participating in two major battles, Franklin came home on January 27, 1848.
